Nigeria Indenpendence: What Happens If #1 = $1?

As Nigeria prepares for her 55th of independence celebrations, Nigerians have genuine reasons to be hopeful for a better Nigeria.

Barely a few months into the current administration, many Nigerians are already developing positive feelings that they may soon be witnessing the Nigeria of their dreams.

In April 2015, while on his first official visit to the International Convention Centre, Owerri, Imo state, after winning the presidential election. President Muhammadu Buhari said that one of his first priorities in office is to bring down the rate of the dollar to the naira.

Coming from a man who when he left office as a military Head of State, the Naira was exchanging at between N1.5 to 1.7 against the Dollars. When and how he will do it? Time will tell.

I believe Nigeria will be great again, and I am already envisioning the Nigeria of my dream. Lets take a peep into my Nigerian dreams.

A discussion between my daughter and I

·        Year: 2035

·        Setting: Nigeria

·        Rating: The Nigeria’s is ranked among the most corrupt free countries in the world

·        Currency conversion rate: #1 = $1

Daughter: Dad, I made it! I gained admission into the University of Maiduguri

Me: Oh that’s great, I am proud of you. But why ‘Maiduguri’, I am not comfortable with you going to the North.

Daughter: Daddy, the northerner’s are very friendly, remember when my school went for an excursion in Kano? We had a great reception in the Hausa community, there were no traces of ethnic difference.

Me: OK that sounds great then.

Daughter: My friend Titi gained and admission too

Me: who is Titi?

Daughter: Titi, whose mother sell roasted plantain down the road

Me: Oh mama Titi, the widow? Who looks after you whenever your mother and I are busy at work?

Daughter: Yes daddy! That is the beauty of our society, every child is the responsibility of all parents.

Me: Oh! Poor woman, how will she cope with the cost of sending a child to the university?

Daughter: oh daddy! That shouldn’t be a problem, the Government made provisions for almost every child especially the indigent ones. The government has trust fund that caters for their needs which covers school fees and pocket money for sundry expenses.

Me: Good, I and your mother have decided to send you oversea after your education

Daughter: No daddy, I why do I need to go abroad? Nigeria is conducive enough for me, the government has made it possible for young graduates to be gainfully employed, and nobody is excited about leaving the country any more. We will rather invest our skills in the development of our beloved country.

Me: But the quality of life is way better…

Daughter: I beg to disagree, daddy, the government has made life easy for all, and there is financial security, job satisfaction, good family life, and improved health and safety conditions. Don’t forget we have good roads, stable electricity, just to mention a few, life is just beautiful in this country.

Me: That sounds like a responsible government

Daughter: Yes! Daddy, the government must is very responsible, our leaders have invested so much in building institutions instead of building individuals, they have invested in our future

Me:  Then, Nigeria is a great country, yes?

Daughter: Yes Daddy, I am Proud to be a Nigerian. God Bless Nigeria

Yes! this is only a dream

But I dare to believe it's possible

what do you think?
